Summary
RoboCop Versus The Terminator feels like a love‑letter to the run‑and‑gun classics of the early ’90s, but with a gritty twist that sets it apart. The team at Virgin Games, led by John Botti and coder Tim Williams, built the game on David Perry’s Mega Drive engine – the same codebase that powered Cool Spot and Global Gladiators – and then tweaked it with a linked‑list sprite system to cram massive monster bosses into the later stages. What really makes the title stand out is its “vectored bullets” mechanic, a direct nod to the addictive feel of Contra III that Botti and Williams spent countless nights dissecting. You start as RoboCop with his trusty Auto‑9, an unlimited‑ammo sidearm, and can swap in heavier, limited‑stock weapons as the action escalates. The developers, fresh out of college and eager for blood, deliberately cranked the gore up to levels that even earned the Genesis version the dubious honor of “Bloodiest Game of 1993” from Electronic Gaming Monthly. Even though the comic‑book source material was off‑limits, the game captures the chaotic clash of metal and circuitry, delivering a fast‑paced, weapon‑swap frenzy that still feels fresh for anyone who grew up with a Master System controller in hand.
Storyline
RoboCop versus The Terminator (often called RoboCop vs. The Terminator) drops players into a bleak future where John Connor’s resistance is losing a war against Skynet’s robot armies. The resistance discovers that the cybernetic tech used to create RoboCop is a key building block for Skynet, so they send a soldier named Flo back in time to eliminate RoboCop before the AI can be built, while Skynet counters by dispatching Terminators to stop her.
RoboCop meets Flo and the two join forces, battling Terminators, OCP security forces, and various obstacles. After locating a Terminator inside the OCP headquarters, RoboCop plugs into a console to reprogram the building’s security, only to be trapped, digitized, and have his body dismantled for Skynet’s construction. He watches the rise of Skynet before using his digitized consciousness to seize control of an abandoned robotics factory, rebuild himself, and finally destroy the Skynet CPU.
With the AI core shattered, RoboCop prevails and turns his attention to helping humanity rebuild from the devastation.
