Rampage landed on the Sega Master System with a surprisingly solid feel, especially given the hardware’s modest power. The developers had to work around the console’s rectangular‑tile graphics, which is why the cityscapes look almost identical and the monsters share palettes, but the result still feels chaotic enough to satisfy a craving for pixel‑perfect destruction. Reviewers at the time noted the game’s quirky charm, with Crash awarding it a respectable 7/10 and praising how the simple controls let up to three players wreak havoc together. What makes the Master System port stand out is how it captures the original arcade’s "no wrong way to play" philosophy – you can punch, climb, and eat your way through levels without a strict objective, turning every session into a goofy free‑for‑all. Even though the graphics are stripped down, the dust‑filled crumble effect cleverly masks animation glitches, a clever trick the team used to hide the console’s limitations. Beyond the Master System, Rampage spread to dozens of platforms, from the Apple II to the NES, each with its own quirks, but the Master System version remains a nostalgic favorite for anyone who grew up with a four‑button controller and a love for smashing virtual skyscrapers.
Rampage lets up to three players control a trio of mutated humans: George, a scientist turned King‑Kong‑style gorilla after a vitamin experiment; Lizzie, a woman who becomes a Godzilla‑like reptile from swimming in radioactive‑tainted water; and Ralph, a man transformed into a massive werewolf after eating a mysterious hot‑dog additive. The opening cutscene introduces the three as Colin (George), his wife Rae (Lizzie), and Nauman (Ralph) before the mutation occurs.
The game’s map spans 128 days of destruction across North America, beginning in Peoria, Illinois and concluding in Plano, Illinois, where a "mega vitamin bonus" heals the monsters and awards a large point bonus. After this, the city cycle repeats five times, totaling 768 days before the game resets to Day 1. Some home‑port versions start in San Jose, California and finish in Los Angeles, California, still covering a tour of U.S. cities and two Canadian locales.
All U.S. states are visited except Connecticut, Delaware, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont, which remain untouched by the monster rampage.
