Summary
Pit‑Fighter on the Master System brings the arcade’s gritty, digit‑video combat to the home console with a surprisingly raw visual style. Instead of hand‑drawn sprites, the game replays actual footage of actors filmed against a bluescreen, making each punch and kick feel like a quick clip from a low‑budget action movie – a technique that was still novel after the earlier Reikai Dʼnshi experiment.
You can pick from three distinct fighters: Buzz, the hulking ex‑wrestler; Ty, a fast‑moving Afro‑Asian‑American kickboxer; and Kato, a sleek Japanese‑American black‑belt. Each character’s speed, power and move set change the flow of the 15‑match ladder, and the system even supports up to three players battling simultaneously. Every third bout turns into a "Grudge Match," where a clone of your own fighter or the other human opponents become the target, and the last one standing walks away with extra cash.
The arena isn’t just a static backdrop – the crowd throws weapons, pushes combatants, and can drop the temporary "power pill" that boosts strength and reduces damage. A roster of eight named opponents, many sharing the real names of the actors who portrayed them, adds a quirky, behind‑the‑scenes flavor to each encounter.
Storyline
In Pit‑Fighter for the Sega Master System, the climax is the so‑called Championship Match. The player faces the Masked Warrior, a mysterious figure who taunts between rounds. If multiple players are in the game before this showdown, they are forced to battle each other until only one remains, who then earns the right to challenge the Masked Warrior. The Masked Warrior remains unseen until the final encounter, adding tension to the fight. Victory over him ends the tournament.
