Summary

The Ninja, known in Japan as Ninja Princess, is a quirky run‑and‑gun title that swaps its original heroine for a male ninja when it lands on the Master System. What makes the console version stand out is its scroll‑collecting mechanic: five green scrolls are hidden throughout the stages, each offering a clue for the final level’s entrance. Miss one and the game nudges you back to the nearest missing scroll, turning the ending into a mini‑treasure hunt. Combat is fast‑paced, with an endless supply of throwing knives and occasional shuriken power‑ups, plus a brief invisibility trick that lets you slip past samurai, rival ninjas and even barking dogs. The level design mixes vertical scrolling with occasional wall‑climbing sections, and the graphics adopt a more realistic style than the arcade original, giving the Master System version its own distinct flavor.

Storyline

Ninja, the Sega Master System action title, is set in Japan’s Edo period around the year 1630. The game takes place in the western province of Ohkami, where an evil tyrant named Gyokuro has seized power. You control a male ninja who must travel through hostile lands to reach the Ohkami castle and put an end to Gyokuro’s oppressive rule. Along the way you fight waves of evil ninja warriors, culminating in a showdown with Gyokuro himself. Defeating the tyrant allows you to rescue the captive princess—who is also a ninja heroine— from her prison inside the castle, restoring peace to the province.
