Summary

Mônica no Castelo do Dragão (Monica at the Castle of the Dragon) is a Brazilian Master System platformer that repurposes the classic Wonder Boy in Monster Land code. Tectoy, lacking an official Sega SDK, reverse‑engineered the game using a home‑grown MS‑DOS editor called EdMega, then swapped Wonder Boy’s sword for Mônica’s stuffed rabbit, Sansão, after Mauricio de Sousa insisted the heroine stay non‑violent. The title hit stores in early December 1991, just before Christmas, and Tectoy even launched a phone line that fielded tips, tricks, and console support. Later a pink Master System—marketed toward girls—bundled the game as its marquee title. Brazilian press gave the graphics and sound solid marks (around 8/10), and the success seeded two sequels, Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate and Turma da Mônica na Terra dos Monstros, extending the Sega‑Tectoy‑Maurício de Sousa partnership beyond the Master System.

Storyline

In *Mônica no Castelo do Dragão* (also known as Monica in the Dragon's Castle), the villain Capitão Feio – the "Mestre dos Bueiros" – dreams of conquering the world and turning it into a dirty, polluted mess. He has gathered an army of monsters that already dominate the land, and the final showdown is against the dragon shown on the cover. Early on, a witch with a crystal ball warns Monica that her quest is extremely dangerous and that only she can defeat Capitão Feio and his minions. Armed with boots, shields, dresses and her trusty stuffed rabbit Sansão, Monica travels through the hostile realms, battling monsters along the way. If she fails, the witch foretells she will be transformed into a filthy monster herself.

The game’s story was later adapted in 1992 as the comic "Mônica contra o terrível exército do Capitão Feio," where Jack Jacaré summons Monica to a game‑cartridge kingdom to stop the invading forces.
