Summary
Master of Darkness, the action‑platform title that landed on both the Game Gear and Master System, feels like a handheld homage to classic gothic beat‑'em‑ups. The game thrusts you into five distinct rounds, each split into sprawling stages—from a misty Thames River to the eerie Labyrinth inside Castle Dracula—culminating in memorable boss fights against Jack the Ripper, a skull‑possessed psychic girl, Count Massen, and the vampire lord himself.
Combat is a blend of close‑quarters and ranged tactics: you can swing knives, canes, rapiers or axes, then swap to pistols, bombs or boomerangs on the fly, though you can only carry one of each type and ammo is scarce. The enemy roster is a carnival of the macabre, featuring zombies, gun‑toting hooligans, bats, wolves, poltergeists, skeletal knights, wizard duellists, owls and ghostly maidens, all adding to the game’s dense, gothic atmosphere.
Critics praised the title for its detailed graphics, tight controls and mood‑setting visuals, with Sega Force awarding it a solid 79 percent. The only real gripe was the occasional annoyance of relentless foes and a steep difficulty curve, but those challenges only deepen the sense of triumph when you finally banish Dracula from his Transylvanian forest.
Storyline
The Master of Darkness opens in fog‑shrouded London, where a psychologist believes a string of murders is the work of Count Dracula. In truth, the killings are carried out by Jack the Ripper, who is using the victims’ bodies and fresh blood in sacrificial rites to resurrect the vampire under the direction of Count Massen. The player steps into the shoes of Dr. Ferdinand Social, a Ouija‑board‑playing psychologist, and discovers a mysterious Psychic Girl possessed by an evil Skull Spirit also aiding the dark ritual. The adventure takes you from the grim streets and warehouses of Victorian England to Count Massen’s castle, then into a laboratory, and finally into a labyrinth inside Castle Dracula in Transylvania, where you confront the Master of Darkness himself.
