Summary

When Sega licensed the Golvellius franchise in 1988, they gave the Master System (known as the Mark III in Japan) a fresh coat of visual polish and completely re‑imagined overworld and dungeon layouts, releasing it worldwide as Golvellius: Valley of Doom. The game plays as a top‑down action adventure where you slash monsters with a sword, and hidden chambers occasionally pop open to reveal characters who hand out advice, upgraded weapons, or useful items. Eight distinct environments each guard a boss, and the journey takes you through an underground maze that flips between side‑scrolling corridors and classic top‑down rooms to reach each lair. A handy password‑save system lets you keep all your gear between sessions, a rare convenience for a 1988 Master System title.

Storyline

In Maou Golvellius (often just called Golvellius), you play as the hero Kelesis, who ventures into the ominous Valley of Doom to rescue Princess Rena. She has entered the valley seeking a rare herb that can heal her ailing father, the King. The journey forces Kelesis to battle demons that dominate the valley’s waters and command the creatures of land, sea, and air, with every inhabitant seemingly arrayed against him.

The adventure sweeps across deserts, mountains, oceans, forests, eerie graveyards, and perilous caves, offering danger and surprise at every turn. Only one entrance exists, and there is no exit except through victory or death. After defeating every boss monster, a hidden final level appears, leading to Golvellius’s secret lair.

When Kelesis finally confronts Golvellius, the foe is revealed to have been possessed by a demon; once freed, Golvellius proves to be a kind creature who joins the hero as an ally. The ending hints at a sequel featuring Kelesis, Golvellius, and Rena, though such a continuation was never released.
