Summary

The Lion King on the Sega Master System is a side‑scrolling platformer that only saw a PAL release, and it even topped the UK sales charts in November 1994. Players guide Simba through ten distinct stages, starting as a cub who mostly defeats foes by jumping, then graduating to an adult with a roar meter, scratching, mauling and throwing attacks.

Life is fragile: a hit to health, a fall into lava, water or a bottomless pit, or a rolling boulder will cost a life, but checkpoints and a replenishable roar meter give you a fighting chance. Collecting bugs restores health, while rarer insects boost both health and roar for the rest of the run; black spiders, however, inflict damage. Hidden throughout the levels are bonus rounds where you control Timon or Pumbaa, racing against time or falling objects to earn extra lives and continues via the Circle of Life icon.

The game leans heavily on Disney’s original animation talent and the movie’s soundtrack, taking you from the Elephant Graveyard’s hyena hordes to a side‑scrolled wildebeest stampede, and finally to a showdown with the evil Uncle Scar on Pride Rock.

Storyline

The Lion King on the Sega Master System follows Simba’s journey from a playful cub to the final showdown with his treacherous uncle Scar. The side‑scrolling adventure captures the majesty and mystery of the African savanna, echoing the blockbuster animated film. Players guide young Simba through familiar locations, learning skills that prepare him for adulthood. As an adult, Simba confronts the evil Uncle Scar in a climactic battle that decides the kingdom’s fate.
