Summary

Line of Fire, known in Japan as Line of Fire: Bakudan Yarou, made its way onto the Master System as an overhead, vertically scrolling shooter. Unlike the arcade original, this version drops the light‑gun mechanic entirely and relies on the standard gamepad for aiming and firing. A quirky hidden feature lets you slip the SegaScope 3‑D Glasses into the mix – just hit a secret button combo at startup and the action pops into stereoscopic depth. The title was ported by Sanritsu and published by Sega in 1991, keeping the core storyline and locations but re‑imagining the playfield for home consoles. Critics were split, noting the solid scrolling action but questioning the loss of the original’s gun‑play feel.

Storyline

Line of Fire follows a two‑man commando unit tasked with infiltrating a terrorist stronghold and escaping after seizing a prototype weapon. The player assumes the role of one of the commandos, sent behind enemy lines to cripple a terrorist organization that boasts a massive arsenal. During the operation the squad discovers a “special weapon” – a vehicle‑mounted automatic machine pistol – and must report its existence. To secure their getaway, the player must blast through swarms of enemy troops and destroy military vehicles, clearing a path for the jeep. The mission culminates with the commando team fleeing the facility, the special weapon proving decisive against the terrorists.
