Summary
When I first stumbled on the Sega Master System version of Home Alone, I was surprised to learn it never launched in the U.S., only hitting European shelves. Developed by Probe, this off‑shoot of the movie tie‑ins feels a cut above the Mega Drive and Game Gear renditions, largely because its crisp graphics and catchy soundtrack earned a nod from Sega Master Force, despite a fair‑weather start that felt a bit simple. The game thrust Kevin through 30 levels across six distinct houses, each populated with a mischievous dog or cat that can snatch or drop valuables. Collecting rings and pots for the safe while managing a pumpkin‑pump weapon keeps the pace lively, and bonus stages strip away the Wet Bandits and pets for a pure run. Around 50,000 copies sold, the title cemented a modest legacy as a surprisingly solid part of early ’90s retro gaming.
Storyline
In the Sega Master System version of Home Alone, Kevin McCallister wakes up to find his family has flown to Paris for a Christmas vacation, leaving him completely alone. While he enjoys the freedom, two bumbling thieves—Harry and Marv, known as the Wet Bandits—sneak toward his house with plans to loot it. Kevin must outwit them by rigging everyday household items into clever traps and makeshift weapons. Each room becomes a battlefield where a simple kitchen utensil or a toy can turn the tide. The game’s goal is to keep the Wet Bandits at bay until the holiday ends.
