Summary

Hokuto no Ken on the Master System is a classic side‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up where you sprint from left to right, punching through waves of foes and grabbing power‑ups for health, extra time or brief invincibility with a high jump. The screen tops show your health, timer and score, and the game even supports an alternating two‑player mode, letting friends trade off as they tackle each stage’s boss with a specific attack pattern.

The title’s most intriguing behind‑the‑scenes fact is that it was programmed by Yuji Naka, the future creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, who also designed the enemies and bosses. When Sega shipped the game overseas it was stripped of the Hokuto no Ken license and rebranded as Black Belt, complete with new sprites, backgrounds and a different soundtrack.

Decades later the original cartridge resurfaced as part of the Sega Ages 2500 collection for PS2 and as a Wii Virtual Console download, giving modern players a chance to experience the retro martial‑arts action that helped shape early console beat‑'em‑ups.
