Summary
The Master System version of Golvellius—often called Golvellius: Valley of Doom—takes the core action‑RPG formula from its MSX roots and dresses it in sharper graphics and fresh map layouts. I’m always struck by how the game splits its world into eight distinct zones, each guarded by a boss that must be taken down before the next area opens up. Between the top‑down overworld and the sideways‑scrolling caverns, the level design feels surprisingly varied for a 1988 title, especially when secret chambers pop up offering upgrades or cryptic advice. A handy password‑save system means you can pause your quest without losing any hard‑earned gear, which was a real lifesaver back then. The game earned solid scores in its day—87% from Computer and Video Games and 82% from Console XS—showing that its blend of tight combat and exploration resonated with players, even if the promised sequel never materialized.
Storyline
The Sega Master System adventure Golvellius follows the brave hero Kelesis as he ventures into the dreaded Valley of Doom. He must rescue Princess Rena, who has entered the valley to fetch a rare herb that can heal her ailing father, the King.
After battling a series of boss monsters across deserts, mountains, oceans, forests, eerie graveyards and dangerous caves, Kelesis can finally access the secret lair that houses Golvellius. The final level only opens once every boss has been defeated, and clues from the game's characters guide the way.
When Golvellius is confronted, it is revealed that a demon had possessed the creature. Freed from the demon, Golvellius proves to be a kind being and joins Kelesis on his journey. The story hints at a sequel featuring Kelesis, Golvellius and Rena, but such a continuation was never released.
