Summary

The Master System version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts (often just called Ghouls'n Ghosts) adds a surprisingly deep power‑up system that feels more like a tiny RPG than a straight platformer. By finding hidden treasure chests and shooting them open, you can uncover new weapons, gold armor, or even a mischievous magician who temporarily turns Arthur into an elderly man or a helpless duck. Gold armor lets you charge your weapon for a burst of magical energy, while the special weapon that appears on the second play‑through is required to face Lucifer – called Loki in the English Sega releases – in his final chamber.

Armor upgrades are split into three parts: helmets grant fresh weapons and spell options, chest pieces increase how much damage you can take, and boots boost your speed, all purchasable in secret shops scattered throughout the six eerie levels. The game also lets Arthur fire both upward and downward while airborne, giving you more tactical freedom when battling the undead hordes. These little twists make the Master System port a distinct experience that rewards exploration as much as reflexes.

Storyline

Three years after the events of Ghosts 'n Goblins, the world of Ghouls'n Ghosts is plunged into chaos as the Ghosts return with swarms of ghouls, unleashing a mortal holocaust across the Princess' kingdom. Sir Arthur arrives too late to save his beloved Princess Prin‑Prin, watching her soul ripped from her body as beams of light strike the terrified villagers. Determined, Arthur sets out on a perilous quest to the hellish castle, where the demon lord Lucifer and his legion await. His mission is to defeat Lucifer, recover the souls stolen by Loki, and restore the soul of Prin‑Prin along with every other mortal victim. The knight’s journey is a relentless battle to reclaim the kingdom’s lost souls.
