Summary
Ghostbusters on the Master System is a surprising product of a six‑week sprint after Columbia Pictures slapped a licensing deal on Activision. Designer David Crane grafted his unfinished "Car Wars" prototype onto the Ghostbusters brand, swapping missiles for proton packs and fitting the familiar Manhattan map into an overhead driving screen.
The gameplay swings between traffic‑filled routes in the Ghostmobile—where you can net wandering spirits for cash—and a side‑view arena where two Busters corral a Slimer onto a snapping trap. The console version even tacks on a fast‑paced shooting‑gallery segment, while the cash earned lets you stock better vehicles and upgrades.
Racing to 2 million copies worldwide, it topped the UK sales chart for three months in early 1985 and still earns retro nods for its catchy Ray Parker Jr.‑inspired music, digitised film quotes, and a surprisingly strategic resource‑management feel.
Storyline
Ghostbusters (the Sega Master System version) puts you in charge of a newly‑opened Ghostbusters franchise in a suddenly haunted New York City. Using nuclear‑accelerated proton packs and ghost traps, you must capture wandering spirits and ferry them back to the secure storage at headquarters.
As the city’s psychokinetic (PK) energy level climbs, each ghost that reaches the mysterious Temple of Zuul raises the meter and brings the evil goddess Gozer closer to resurrection. The game challenges you to keep the free‑roaming ghosts away from the temple for as long as possible, while occasional merges create the towering Stay‑Puft Marshmallow Man who can trample an entire city block. To win, you need to guide at least two Ghostbusters past Mr. Stay‑Puft and destroy the Temple of Zuul before the PK level overwhelms the city.
