Summary

Gain Ground’s 8‑bit Master System incarnation feels like a love letter to classic maze shooters such as Berzerk and Gauntlet, but with a roster of twenty distinct warriors you can swap in and out. I’m always drawn to the way the game splits its action into four rounds of ten stages each, with the tenth stage of every round serving as a boss showdown. The console version expands the arcade’s forty‑level trek to fifty, tacking on ten brand‑new, futuristically themed stages that appear after the “Future” round and seem to take place inside the titular Gain Ground Main System.

What sets the Master System version apart is its dual‑mode design: Normal mode starts you with three characters and littered captives you can rescue, while Hard mode hands you the full roster of twenty from the outset but strips away any captives to rescue. If a character falls, they become a captive—unless you lose the next active hero or run out of party members, in which case they vanish. You get three continues to restart a level with your original trio, keeping the pressure high without feeling hopeless.

Sanritsu handled the 1991 port, translating the Sega System 24 arcade experience onto the 8‑bit hardware while preserving the series’ signature blend of timed exits and enemy‑clearing objectives. The result is a surprisingly deep, replay‑friendly shooter that still feels fresh decades later.

Storyline

In the year 2348, the Federated Government, worried that a long era of peace had dulled humanity’s fighting instinct, built a massive training simulation called Gain Ground. The system was meant to rekindle the spirit of combat among earthlings.

But the supercomputer that ran the simulation suddenly malfunctioned, seizing dozens of citizens as hostages. To free the captives, three of the bravest warriors were quickly sent into the deadly virtual battlefield of Gain Ground.
