Summary

The Master System port of Fantasy Zone keeps the core cute‑'em‑up shooter mechanics while looking noticeably different from the original arcade version, because the 8‑bit hardware could only approximate the System 16 graphics. The ship Opa‑Opa still darts between looping horizontal stages, lands on the ground with little feet and attacks with a primary weapon and limited bombs; money collected lets you buy upgrades from floating balloons, though any death strips them away.

Missing from the console edition are the radar that marks base locations and the energy gauge, and two original bosses have been swapped out for alternatives. The game still ends with a boss‑rush stage, and critics responded positively, earning 4 ★ in Dragon (1988) and high scores of 87% and 91% from later reviews.

Storyline

Fantasy Zone puts you in the cockpit of Opa‑Opa, a sentient spaceship tasked with repelling an alien invasion across the eponymous cluster of planets. As the lone defender, Opa‑Opa darts through colorful skies, blasting enemy forces and clearing each world of the threat. The game's simple premise drives the action: protect the Fantasy Zone system from being overrun. Each planet offers its own challenges, but the core goal remains the same—stop the invasion and restore peace.
