Summary
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (often just called Mean Bean Machine) feels like a quirky remix of the classic falling‑block puzzles I grew up with. The Master System version adds a dedicated Puzzle Mode where you’re forced to clear preset bean arrangements, a nice twist that keeps the brain ticking between the usual frantic matches. The core loop is simple: line up four beans of the same colour, watch them pop, and hope the resulting chain sends those annoying grey “refugee beans” into your opponent’s field. Those refugee beans can’t be matched directly, so you have to engineer a combo next to them to clear them—a mechanic that turns every match into a mini‑strategy session. While the game’s difficulty ramps up quickly, especially in the 13‑opponent Scenario Mode, the tight controls and the goofy Sonic‑themed cast make each victory feel rewarding, even when the beans start spilling over the top.
Storyline
In Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (often just called Mean Bean Machine), the villainous Doctor Robotnik hatches a scheme to wipe out all fun on the planet Mobius. He kidnaps the cheerful bean‑like citizens of Beanville, corralling them into dark dungeons with the help of his Henchbots. Once gathered, the victims are shipped to the giant Mean Bean‑Steaming Machine, where they are transformed into robot slaves that join Robotnik’s Badnik army. The player assumes the role of Has Bean, who battles through the dungeons, breaking the robot‑making process and rescuing the captured beans. The story culminates in a final showdown with Robotnik, after which the rescued Beanville residents are freed and the Mean Bean Machine is shut down.
