Summary

Choplifter! on the Sega Master System feels like a distilled version of the original Apple II rescue‑mission classic, re‑imagined through Sega’s arcade conversion. The helicopter can point left, right or forward, letting you fire in any direction while you hover over the hostile terrain. Each of the four barracks holds 16 hostages, and the chopper can only carry that many at once, so you’re forced into a series of tense shuttle runs as enemy tanks, jet fighters and even an alien craft grow more aggressive. Landing too close to a hostage or blocking the exit will kill them, and staying grounded makes you a sitting target for missiles and bombs.

Despite the steep learning curve, the game was praised for its tight controls and escalating challenge. Console XS gave the Master System version an 85 % score, and Computer and Video Games rated it 87 % in 1989, confirming that the portable adaptation captured the original’s frantic rescue drama.

Storyline

In Choplifter for the Sega Master System, the mission begins with the nefarious Bungeling Empire kidnapping delegates bound for the United Nations Conference on Peace and Child Rearing. Their captors have holed up the hostages in a fortified barracks deep inside hostile territory. The player’s helicopter isn’t a standard military craft—it was assembled from parts smuggled in disguised as a mail‑sorting machine. Your task is to pilot this covert chopper, slip past enemy defenses, and extract the delegates one by one. Once rescued, the survivors must be ferried to a waiting U.S. Postal Service building, where they can be safely released and the conference can proceed.
