Summary

California Games drops you onto a sun‑splashed beach where six wildly different events await: half‑pipe skateboarding, freestyle footbag, surfing with the iconic Rippin’ Rick, roller‑skating, BMX bike tricks, and a flying‑disc toss. Each sport feels like a quick summer‑day competition, and the Master System version captures that breezy vibe with bright sprites and punchy sound effects.

The team behind the game was a quirky mix of specialists – even a real surfer helped code the wave physics, while Chuck Sommerville crafted the half‑pipe routine that later inspired his puzzle classic Chip’s Challenge. Ken Nicholson, who programmed the footbag segment, eventually contributed to the tech that became Microsoft’s DirectX, and BMX designer Kevin Norman went on to found an educational software firm.

When it launched, the title became a runaway hit, moving over 300,000 units in its first nine months and topping half a million by ’89. Critics praised its inventive charm, noting the surfing animation as especially realistic, and even the CEO of Epyx said it was the first game to equally attract boys and girls during playtesting.
