Summary
Asterix on the Master System delivers a classic side‑scrolling platform experience that leans heavily into the quirks of its comic‑book roots. Before each level you pick either Asterix or Obelix, and the two heroes play very differently: Asterix can toss a magic potion to blast blocks, while Obelix relies on his massive punch to smash obstacles, meaning the same stage can feel easier or harder depending on who you choose. Health is managed with three points at the start, but defeating certain bosses grants a heart that expands your maximum health up to six, and extra health can be scavenged from items scattered throughout the stages. The game is split into eight areas, each containing one to three stages, and most levels require you to locate a key that unlocks the exit door. A hidden bonus round appears after you collect fifty bones; here Dogmatix hops across colored bubbles that change state with each jump, rewarding you based on how many you pop. Critics praised the title for its faithful comic‑book visuals, smooth animation, and solid challenge, with scores hovering in the high‑80s to low‑90s across the board.
Storyline
In Asterix on the Sega Master System the Romans finally fail to conquer the last Gaulish village and resort to kidnapping Getafix, the druid who brews the magic potion that gives the villagers supernatural strength. Vitalstatistix, the chief of the village, orders his two bravest warriors, Asterix and Obelix, to track down the captured druid. Their mission is to keep Getafix out of Caesar’s hands and bring him back to the village at any cost. The rescue quest drives the entire storyline of the game.
