Summary

Asterix and the Great Rescue feels like a hidden gem from Sega’s early‑90s library. The Master System port lets you swap between Asterix and Obelix on the fly, a neat twist that the Genesis version forces you to decide before the level even begins. At the start screen you can pick your difficulty and even mute the soundtrack – a small but welcome nod to players who prefer the classic chiptune vibe. The game’s five sprawling stages are peppered with magic potions that boost your attacks as you battle toward a final showdown in Rome. Behind the catchy tunes is Nathan McCree, whose debut video‑game score was born after he showed off a music sequencer for the Mega Drive, giving the title a surprisingly polished audio backdrop.

Storyline

Asterix and the Great Rescue (sometimes just called Asterix & the Great Rescue) puts the indomitable Gauls on a mission to save their friends from Roman hands. The mischievous druid Getafix and the loyal canine Dogmatix have been captured by the evil Roman forces as Caesar tightens his grip on Gaul. Asterix and his hulking companion Obelix must battle through the legion’s ranks to free their buddies from Caesar’s clutches. The game’s storyline revolves around this daring rescue, with the heroes racing against the Romans’ takeover of the countryside.
