Summary

Alex Kidd in Miracle World feels like a love‑letter to 80s arcade platformers, but with a few quirks that keep it fresh. The 2D stages—seventeen in total—mix scrolling runs with single‑screen puzzles, and Alex’s simple punch does double duty: it defeats the odd monster and smashes rocks to reveal hidden paths and Baums, the in‑game cash you can spend on motorbikes, helicopters, and other oddities.

At the end of many levels you’re forced into a quick game of jan‑ken‑pon (rock‑paper‑scissors) against Janken’s henchmen; lose the hand‑sign and it’s game over, just as a single hit will also end your run. The title has no save feature, but a secret cheat—hold up and tap button 2 eight times on the Game Over screen—lets you restart the level with three lives for 400 Baums.

Originally a Dragon Ball tie‑in in 1984, the project was scrapped when the license fell through and rebuilt from scratch under Sega’s Hayao Nakayama. Later releases were baked into Master System consoles, swapping Alex’s onigiri snack for a hamburger and flipping the jump/punch button layout in the integrated versions.

Storyline

Alex Kidd in Miracle World follows a young martial artist named Alex Kidd who learns that the villain Janken the Great has defeated King Thunder of the city of Radaxian and kidnapped the king’s son, Prince Egle (also called Igul), along with Egle’s fiancée Princess Lora.

Discovering that he himself is the lost son of King Thunder, Alex sets out on a quest to rescue the kingdom. He battles Janken’s henchmen and gathers various items that lead him toward the final confrontation.

In the climax Alex defeats Janken, watches the tyrant turn to stone, and claims the royal crown. With the crown restored, the people of Radaxian celebrate the coronation of Prince Egle as their new king.
