Summary

Aerial Assault feels like a love‑letter to classic side‑scrolling shooters, letting me pilot a lone Freedom Fighter against a string of five distinct targets. The roster includes the oddly named Vinsk ship, the heavily‑armed CB‑53 Bomber, a mysterious foe called "El", and two imposing cliff‑top fortresses that demand precise timing. Along each route I’m swarmed by a mix of enemy jets, choppers, submarines, jeeps and even parachute‑dropping bombs, which keeps the action constantly shifting.

The game rewards aggressive play: blasting the spinning fighters, the tiny helicopters, or the mines on the final stage grants a power‑up that can boost or even dial back my firepower, adding a quirky risk‑reward layer. Three difficulty levels are offered, but the "Easy" mode is a dead end – you simply can’t finish the campaign without stepping up to Normal or Hard. Critics seemed to agree, with Computer and Video Games, Mean Machines Sega and S: The Sega Magazine all handing it an 82% score, a solid endorsement for a Master System title.

Storyline

In Aerial Assault, a ruthless group known as the N.A.C. has built a massive laser emitter called “EL” that can slowly strip away the Earth’s ozone layer over a decade. By 1999 the organization launches a full‑scale assault on every nation, overwhelming conventional militaries with its sheer firepower. The player steps into the role of the enigmatic “Freedom Fighter,” a lone pilot with no official ties to any government. This rogue aviator takes to the skies to thwart the N.A.C.’s destructive plans.

The campaign pits the Freedom Fighter against waves of enemy aircraft and ground defenses, each designed to protect the EL’s operation. As the laser’s threat looms, the pilot must navigate hostile territory, destroy key installations, and ultimately halt the ozone‑draining weapon. The storyline blends Cold‑War‑style paranoia with a futuristic environmental crisis, giving the Master System shooter a surprisingly urgent narrative.
