Summary

Playing as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family feels like wandering a spooky, open‑ended mansion where every hallway could hide a secret. The side‑scrolling world lets you roam indoor rooms and an outdoor garden in any order, echoing the freedom of classic Zelda‑style adventures. Hidden doors—one even invisible—lead to power‑packed chambers like Pugsley’s Den, where extra lives and a stash of 27 bonus lives await the curious.

Enemies range from goofy rabbits to menacing ghosts, and each boss clutches a member of the Addams clan, turning every showdown into a rescue mission. Gomez dispatches foes by stomping, but the real fun comes from the quirky power‑ups: a sword for close combat, a golf club that fires balls, speed‑boosting shoes, and the fezi‑copter hat that lets you fly—though the hat fizzles out once you change rooms. Collecting cash fills heart containers (two to start, three more possible) and grants extra lives at $100 intervals, while boxes featuring Thing drop helpful hints about room mechanics.

Scattered throughout the mansion are extra‑life and money caches, and after each boss you receive a password that rewards either a rescued family member or another heart. Critics noted the game’s visuals and audio as merely average and pointed out a lack of depth and challenge, but the endless continues and treasure‑hunt vibe keep the experience oddly addictive for anyone who loves a good retro haunt.

Storyline

The Sega Master System game *The Addams Family* pits Gomez against a scheming Abigail Craven who wants the Addams’ secret wealth. Abigail brain‑washes a memory‑lost Uncle Fester and teams up with the sinister Judge and the family attorney Tully Alford, who seizes control of the mansion. Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday and Granny go to the house to discuss the property with Tully, only to be snatched by Abigail’s forces. When Gomez returns home he discovers his family missing and learns that Abigail, the Judge and Tully are holding them hostage. His sole task is to rescue each member, confront the evil Judge and put an end to the kooky, spooky climax.
