Summary
When I first saw Beggar Prince at a retro expo, I was struck by how a Taiwanese RPG from 1996 could still feel fresh on a Sega Genesis. Super Fighter Team rescued the original Xin Qigai Wangzi, translated it into English, and released the cartridge in 2006 – the first new Genesis title in North America in eight years.
The game packs a hefty 32‑megabit ROM into a custom Tototek‑designed board, offering four save slots and a glossy 27‑page manual, all sealed in a sturdy clamshell case. Compatibility is surprisingly broad: it runs on NTSC and PAL Genesis, Mega Drive, and Nomad, though early runs refuse to save on 32X‑linked systems and can crash on some European Multi‑Mega units.
Only 1,500 copies ever left the factory across three print runs, making each box a coveted collector’s item; the third run even rewired the save routine to work everywhere. By the time the final batch shipped, the game had already reached fans in more than 25 countries.
In 2013 the title finally crossed over to PC, bundled with two other Super Fighter Team RPGs, ensuring that the quirky charm of Beggar Prince can be explored without hunting down a rare cartridge.
Storyline
Xin Qigai Wangzi (Unl) for the Sega Genesis adapts the classic tale of The Prince and the Pauper. The game’s plot follows two identical youths—one royal, one common—who swap places and must navigate each other’s worlds.
