Summary

X‑Men is a side‑scrolling action title that lets you pick from four core heroes—Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, and Cyclops—each equipped with a unique mutant power bar that fuels special attacks and slowly refills on its own. Wolverine’s claws boost his punches and grant mid‑air combos, Gambit swings a bo staff and can charge cards, Cyclops fires rebounding optic blasts and performs a variety of kicks, while Nightcrawler’s teleport lets him skip sections or transport a teammate.

When the action gets tough, you can call in four additional X‑Men—Storm, Rogue, Iceman, and Archangel—for brief support, and even Jean Grey appears to rescue fallen allies. A cameo by Sauron shows up near the end of the first level, oddly helping the player. The mutant power bars retain their current levels when you switch characters, adding a tactical layer to the chaos.

Storyline

In the Genesis title X-Men, the action takes place inside Professor X’s Danger Room – a high‑tech training arena that can simulate any environment, much like a Star Trek holodeck. A satellite‑borne virus hijacks the system, scrambling the simulations and stripping away the safety limits that normally protect the team. The X‑Men must fight through the chaotic, ever‑changing scenarios while searching for the source of the infection. The manual reveals that the virus was deliberately planted, and the heroes eventually trace it back to Magneto, the leader of the Brotherhood. The climax pits the mutants against Magneto himself in a final showdown to purge the Danger Room of his malicious code.
