Summary

X‑Men for the Sega Genesis drops you into a frantic side‑scrolling brawl where you can pick between Wolverine, Gambit, Cyclops or Nightcrawler. Each hero punches, kicks and taps a mutant power bar to unleash signature moves—claws and rapid regeneration for Wolverine, a bo staff and charged cards for Gambit, optic‑blast combos for Cyclops, and short‑range teleport for Nightcrawler. The bar replenishes slowly, encouraging you to blend brute force with tactics, and you can swap characters on the fly, inheriting their remaining power. When the action gets tough, a roster of allies like Storm, Rogue, Iceman or Archangel can be called in for a boost, while Jean Grey scoops up teammates who fall, and a surprise cameo from Sauron appears near the end of the first stage. Fletcher Beasley’s synth‑driven score, built with the Genesis’s YM2612 chip, underpins the mayhem. Despite selling over a million copies, the title is infamous for its punishing platforming and near‑unbeatable bosses—a fact that earned it a spot on IGN’s “hard games” list and a solid 82 % rating from Power Unlimited.

Storyline

In the Genesis side‑scrolling beat ’em up X‑Men, the action is set inside the mansion’s Danger Room, a high‑tech training arena that can simulate any environment. A satellite‑borne computer virus hijacks the system, scrambling the safety protocols and causing the simulations to run wildly out of control. The X‑Men must fight through the chaotic training scenarios while searching for the source of the infection. The manual reveals that the virus was planted by Magneto, leader of the Brotherhood, forcing the heroes to track down and purge the code. Once the virus is eliminated, the final stage pits the team against Magneto himself in a showdown inside the corrupted Danger Room.
