Summary

X-Men 2: Clone Wars (often just called Clone Wars) drops you into a 16‑bit side‑scroller that feels both familiar and upgraded from the 1993 predecessor. The game swaps the fixed hero for a roster of eight mutants—Beast, Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, Magneto (unlockable)—each with unique tricks like wall‑crawling, double jumps or hovering. Stages can be cleared with any character, but the level design rewards matching a hero’s power to the obstacles ahead.

Combat mixes melee with character‑specific mutant attacks that grow stronger as health approaches full, urging you to stay alive for bigger blasts. Some powers charge when you stand still, and hidden health pickups often require abilities such as Cyclops’s charged optic blast or Nightcrawler’s teleport. With only nine lives and no continues, you’re forced to swap mutants after each death, keeping the pace brisk.

The soundtrack, composed by Kurt Harland of Information Society, earned praise as one of the best on the Genesis, while reviewers highlighted sharp sprites and multi‑layer backgrounds. Critics noted the game didn’t reinvent the formula, but its expanded cast and polish secured spots on several “best Genesis” lists, cementing its reputation among classic comic‑book games.

Storyline

X-Men 2: Clone Wars follows the X‑Men as they respond to a Cerebro alert about the technorganic Phalanx. The alien race has contaminated a sentinel‑manufacturing plant, prompting Professor X to dispatch Beast, Psylocke, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Cyclops. Their mission quickly expands when the virus spreads to Avalon, the home of Exodus and Magneto; Magneto then joins forces with the team to stop the Phalanx from assimilating Earth.

The heroes track the infection to Apocalypse’s hidden facility, defeat him, and move on to the Savage Land where they destroy a Phalanx‑engineered clone of Brainchild. Afterward they board a Phalanx ship, fend off an attack by Deathbird, and infiltrate the clone factory and the Nexus.

The final confrontation pits the X‑Men against Phalanx copies of themselves, bringing the saga to a climactic showdown.
