Summary
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck feels like a love letter to classic Disney animation, wrapped in a bright Sega Genesis platformer. You can wander solo as Mickey or Donald, each with a quirky set of moves – Mickey squeezes through tight gaps while Donald must detour, opening hidden realms that the other can’t reach. In two‑player mode the duo can literally stand on each other’s shoulders and swing on ropes, letting Mickey pull Donald through passages that would otherwise be impassable.
Defeating foes with a flourish of their capes turns enemies into harmless doves, cards or other whimsical objects, and each boss drops a new magic spell – from a flying carpet to an underwater air bubble – that unlocks the next stage. The five main worlds – Enchanted Forest, Among the Clouds, Underwater Adventure, The Library and The Magic Box – are peppered with optional sub‑stages that only appear when you’re playing as one character or the other.
Visually, the game leans heavily on Disney’s golden age, borrowing scenery from Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia and even the playing‑card soldiers of Alice in Wonderland. Critics noted the gorgeous graphics; MegaTech gave it a 90% Hyper Game Award, while Mega called it easy but perfect for a pair of kids. Bad Influence! handed it a flawless 10/10, and GamesRadar later ranked it 22nd among the best Genesis titles.
Storyline
In World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (often just called World of Illusion), the duo stumble upon a mysterious magical box while rehearsing a magic act. The box belongs to the evil magician Pete, who whisks Mickey and Donald away to a fantastical realm where they must cooperate to escape. Across soaring magic‑carpet skies, a towering forest, and an underwater bubble world, the pair perform dazzling feats of magic to thwart Pete’s sorcery and find a way home. Along the way, familiar faces like Minnie, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, Clarabelle Cow, and Huey, Dewey and Louie pop in to lend a hand. Together they battle the crafty sorcerer and strive to return to their own world.
