Summary
World Cup USA '94 (often just called World Cup USA 94) feels surprisingly deep for a mid‑90s Genesis title. The bird’s‑eye view lets you pick everything from a one‑minute half to a full 45‑minute match, and the pre‑match menu offers over 15 distinct moves, manual goalkeeper control, ball‑trapping and even the 1994‑era no‑pass‑back rule. When you take charge of the keeper you must guess the shooter’s aim and dive with the D‑pad and buttons, while outfield players can pass, lob, shoot or take free‑kicks, and penalties unfold on a separate screen with a swinging direction indicator.
The game boasts more than 3,000 animation frames, but the sprites stay tiny and the atmosphere thin, a point critics at Mean Machines highlighted when they scored the Genesis version 67% and noted it fell short of Sensi and FIFA. Still, the roster system gives each of the 24 qualified nations (plus eight non‑qualifiers) unique speed, dribble and shooting stats, and the Genesis port was the first console game to support a 16:9 widescreen mode, even displaying the PolyGram Video logo on stadium ads.
