Summary

Whip Rush (sometimes just called Whip Rush) is a space‑themed shooter that blends classic side‑scrolling action with occasional vertical descents and ascents, putting it in the same lane as titles like Gaiares and R‑Type. The game’s visual style and fast‑paced combat feel right at home on the Sega Genesis, and both the Japanese Mega Drive and North American Genesis releases run in English despite their different box art.

At the start you choose a difficulty level that determines whether you begin with three, four, or six ships, giving you a flexible entry point. Each craft is equipped with rotating Power Claws that can be extended for both offense and defense, and you can mount up to two of these claw units, which themselves fire bullets.

Throughout the run you can upgrade your arsenal among four options—Laser, Missile, Fireball and the Power Claw itself—letting you tailor the firepower to your play style as the action ramps up.

Storyline

In the 22nd century humanity has exhausted the natural resources of every planet in the Solar System. Three Alpha‑type robotic starships left the overpopulated Earth on a colonisation mission. After five years the pilots reported finding a planet similar to Earth, called Voltegeus, but contact was lost as they approached. Within a week a massive alien vessel appeared near Mars and began attacking Earth.

Earth’s smallest yet most powerful craft, the Whip Rush, is deployed to halt the alien invasion. The player must pilot the Whip Rush to repel the Voltegians and uncover the fate of the missing colony ships.
