Summary

I start each case as a fresh‑out‑the‑gate Time Cadet, climbing the ranks through Time Patroller, Investigator, Inspector, Detective, Ace Detective and finally Super Time Sleuth. The core loop is a race against the clock: hop between four historic eras—400‑1300, 1300‑1700, 1700‑1900, and 1900‑present—while chasing a trail of clues that point to the next destination. The game hands you a New American Desk Encyclopedia, turning every research session into a mini‑lesson in history and geography.

At each stop I interrogate locals for travel hints and physical descriptors, then piece together a warrant that matches the crook’s looks and hobbies. Once the warrant is ready, I launch a Capture Robot to nab the thief before time expires. The challenge scales up to 80 criminals, and the interface supports English, French, Spanish, German and Italian, with locales ranging from ancient China to modern‑day USA.

Beyond the puzzle‑solving, the title doubles as an educational tool: the 28‑page manual and built‑in encyclopedia reinforce the facts you uncover, and the game even establishes ACME Headquarters in San Francisco, giving the series a new home base for future time‑hopping adventures.

Storyline

In Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego for the Sega Genesis, you assume the role of a secret agent working for the Acme Detective Agency. Armed with the Chronoskimmer, you jump across centuries to chase Carmen Sandiego and her henchmen, who belong to the Villains International League of Evil. Your mission is to gather clues and the proper warrants needed to lock down each criminal and ultimately bring Carmen herself to justice.

The chase follows a “trail throughout the time stream,” leading you to historic hideouts where the thieves are stealing the world’s treasures. By tracking the villains through key moments in history, you prevent Carmen from rewriting the past and restore the proper flow of time.
