Summary
Wacky Races on the Genesis feels like a lost Mario‑Kart experiment, built on a mode‑7 engine that mimics the wacky world of the Hanna‑Barbera cartoon. The prototype offers a surprisingly large roster of tracks, yet the physics are deliberately loose—there’s no collision detection and rival drivers drift off‑track as if they’re more cartoon props than competitors. You control the infamous Dastardly and his mutt Mutley, armed with a forward‑shooting arrow that can impale opponents, while the courses litter boulders and even hopping rabbits that can be knocked out for extra points. The goal isn’t pure speed; you must either wear down rivals until they quit or strategically wait for them to crash, then claim the required finishing position. Although the graphics and background art match a near‑final Genesis build, the game never saw an official release, leaving it as a curious footnote in retro racing history.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis version of Wacky Races, you step into the shoes of the infamous duo, Dick Dastardly and his snickering dog Mutley. The game’s twist is that you’re not simply trying to win the race outright. Instead, your objective is to sabotage the competition and finish in a specific position. You do this by damaging rival racers with a variety of underhanded tricks. The goal is to out‑maneuver the other cartoon racers while staying true to Dastardly’s devious style.
