Summary
Virtua Racing, often shortened to V.R., was a true turning point for 3D racing on the Sega Genesis. To mimic the arcade’s groundbreaking polygon engine, Sega slipped a dedicated SVP chip onto the cartridge, cranking out roughly 9,000 polygons per second—far beyond what the console could normally manage and even outpacing the Super NES’s SuperFX. That hardware miracle drove the price sky‑high (about $100 in the US), which made the game a collector’s item as soon as it hit shelves in 1994. The port kept the arcade’s three tracks—Big Forest, Bay Bridge, and Acropolis—and even retained the V.R. View System, letting players toggle between four camera angles, a feature that later became a staple in Sega’s own racers. Critics were quick to notice; GamePro hailed it as the best Genesis showcase at CES ’94, while Electronic Gaming Monthly called it the best 16‑bit racer yet, and Famitsu gave it a 33/40. Despite the steep cost and incompatibility with later Genesis revisions, the game’s faithful recreation of the original’s 3‑D feel cemented its legacy as one of the most influential racing titles of its era.
