Summary
Vectorman burst onto the Sega Genesis in 1995, showing that the aging 16‑bit box could still deliver a visual wow‑factor rivaling early PlayStation titles. BlueSky’s “Vector Piece Animation” stitched together 23 individual sprites at 60 fps, giving the metal hero fluid, pseudo‑3‑D movement that still looks fresh today.
Gameplay hinges on speedy platforming, eight‑direction laser pulses, and a deep power‑up system. Collecting multipliers doubles damage, while upgrades transform Vectorman into a helicopter for flight or a high‑speed vehicle for burst runs. Sixteen sprawling stages offer multiple routes, hidden secrets, and a timer that rewards quick, efficient exploration.
Critics and players embraced the game’s slick graphics, massive levels, and solid sound, driving half‑a‑million U.S. sales during the 1995 holiday rush. Both EGM and GamePro named it the best Genesis game of the year, cementing Vectorman’s legacy as the console’s final triumph before the transition to 32‑bit worlds.
Storyline
Vectorman (often just called Vectorman) is set in 2049 after humanity abandoned a polluted Earth for the stars. The planet is left to a fleet of mechanized “Orbots” tasked with cleaning the toxic waste.
When the supervisory Orbot Raster is mistakenly fused to a live nuclear missile, he goes insane and declares himself WarHead, seizing control of every Orbot and threatening any returning humans.
The only robot immune to his mind‑control is Vectorman, who had been away disposing of sludge in space. Returning to the ruined world, Vectorman battles WarHead’s corrupted machines, dismantles his forces and works to restore Earth before humanity can safely come back.
