The Genesis version of Valis feels like a bridge between the series’ early roots and its later evolution. Its gameplay mechanics echo those of Valis III, offering smoother platforming and more refined combat than the original arcade‑style title.

While the core story and genre stay true to the first game, this remake swaps out the familiar stages for fresh locales, introduces brand‑new enemies and bosses, and sprinkles in additional cutscenes that flesh out the narrative in ways the original never did.

Storyline

Valis follows Yuko Asou, a late‑1980s Japanese schoolgirl who is chosen to guard three realms: Earth, the spirit world, and Vecanti, the Dream World. She wields the mystical sword Valis, a weapon that links the dimensions and grants her the power to fight darkness. When the demon lord Rogles snuffs out the sacred light of Vecanti, the realm’s queen Valia sends a desperate plea for a hero. Answering that call, Yuko is summoned by magical forces and thrust into Vecanti to confront Rogles and restore the lost light.
