Summary
Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (often just called Valis) on the Sega Genesis reshapes the classic platformer with a system that leans toward the smoother, more polished feel of Valis III. It retains the original storyline and core action‑RPG vibe, but every level boasts fresh environments, re‑imagined enemies, and brand‑new bosses that weren’t seen in the first release. The addition of extra cutscenes gives the narrative more depth, while the control tweaks—such as a tighter jump arc and a combo sword attack—make combat feel crisp and responsive. For players who grew up with the early Valis titles, the Genesis remake offers a nostalgic bridge to the series’ later evolution, presenting enough new content to feel fresh without abandoning the charm that defined the original.
Storyline
Valis follows Yuko Asou, a typical Japanese high‑school girl in the late 1980s who is unexpectedly chosen to guard three realms. A dark force—demon lord Rogles—has snuffed out the Light of Vecanti, the Dream World’s vital source of power. In desperation, the queen of Vecanti, Valia, sends a magical plea across dimensions, and Yuko is summoned from Earth to answer it. Armed with the mystical sword Valis, she must travel between modern Tokyo, the spirit realm, and the shattered Dream World to restore the Light. The game’s narrative weaves her ordinary life with epic battles, as she fights Rogles to save both the ethereal and human worlds.
