Summary
The Genesis version of Valis III feels like a trimmed‑down but polished re‑imagining of the original. Most of the cinematic cutscenes were stripped away, a handful of stages vanished, and a brand‑new level was slipped in, while the remaining stages were tightened and given a more uniform look. Boss encounters and the parallax scrolling also received a noticeable boost, making the action feel snappier.
A standout feature is the ability to swap between three heroines on the fly. Yuko fires a chargeable energy wave, Cham wields a whip, and Valna blasts magical projectiles, each with upgradable weapons and elemental spells—lightning, fire, and ice. A ground‑slide doubles as an attack, and certain sections force you to stick with a specific character, especially during boss fights where the chosen heroine triggers a unique ending scene.
The team behind the port was largely the same crew from Valis II, with Masami Hanari directing and Fumiyuki Moriyama producing. Co‑programmers Yoshiki “UAI” Yamauchi and Masayasu Yamamoto handled the conversion, while composer Michiko Naruke contributed to a trio of soundtracks under Shinobu Ogawa’s direction.
The game debuted in Japan in March 1991 and reached North America by June of the same year via Renovation Products; a European launch was slated with UbiSoft but never materialized. Decades later, the Genesis edition resurfaced in the Renovation Collection 1 for Evercade (2022) and in Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection III for Switch (2023).
Storyline
In Valis III for the Sega Genesis, the Dark World’s ruler King Glames marshals his forces to seize both Vecanti and Earth, hoping to find a new home before his own planet is destroyed. Yuko Asou teams up with her allies Cham and Valna, wielding the mystical Valis sword whose power proves far greater than previously seen. Throughout the adventure Yuko rescues Cham from a kidnapping plot and frees Valna from captivity, then the trio meets Vecanti’s ruler Nizetti and unlocks the blade’s full potential. This leads to a climactic showdown against Glames and the returning foe Rogles, where Yuko triumphs and is granted the honor of becoming a goddess of Vecanti, abandoning her guardian duties on Earth. The Valis sword ascends to the heavens as Vecanti looks toward a prosperous future, while Cham and Valna bid Yuko farewell.
