Summary

Urban Strike feels like a high‑octane road‑trip across the United States, but the road is a helicopter cockpit. The game drops you into the sleek Mohican, a speed‑focused chopper armed with machine guns, Hydra rockets and Hellfire missiles, and forces you to juggle limited ammo, fuel and armor while you blast through enemy bases from Hawaii to Las Vegas. Early missions even hand you a bulkier Blackhawke for rescue ops, and a stolen Ground Assault Vehicle makes a surprise appearance in the third level, adding a rare ground‑combat flavor to the series.

What really sets Urban Strike apart is the occasional on‑foot segment – the only time the Strike franchise lets you ditch the rotors and fight inside buildings with a rifle and missile launcher. Hostage rescues and captured enemies become more than score‑chasing; they refill your armor and keep you alive long enough to refuel at floating barrels or grab ammo crates scattered across the map. Critics praised the massive, varied missions and the techno‑driven soundtrack, with Mega giving an 88% score and GamePro calling it a top‑notch helicopter‑combat cart. Though Next Generation noted the gameplay didn’t reinvent the wheel, the game’s sprawling scenery and the novelty of ground combat earned it a spot on GamesMaster’s 1996 Mega Drive Top 10.

Storyline

Urban Strike takes place in 2001 and pits the player against H. R. Malone, a millionaire media mogul who once ran for U.S. President. Malone has built a cult of millions and uses his charisma to push a moralistic agenda that masks a plan to overthrow the government.

The plot kicks off when Agent Ego, a former co‑pilot from Jungle Strike and a spy for the secret Strike C.O.R.E. organization, discovers Malone’s scheme to assemble a superweapon. Ego is killed by a car bomb before he can report the location of the weapon’s components, which are being gathered in Hawaii.

The first mission in Hawaii has the player intercept Malone’s theft of giant mirrors and rescue a plastic surgeon targeted by assassins. The surgeon reveals he once operated on a severely burned man—later identified as Malone—who was actually Carlos Ortega, a villain from Jungle Strike.

Subsequent missions take the player through Mexico and San Francisco before Malone completes the superweapon and fires it on New York City, then twice more, allowing Strike C.O.R.E. to trace the source to a Las Vegas‑area facility. After infiltrating the base and capturing Malone, he tries to kill the player with a chest‑strapped time bomb, but the player drops him onto his own weapon as it detonates, destroying both.
