Summary
ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron feels like a love‑letter to the early ’90s funk‑filled console era. The game drops the random‑dungeon vibe of the original and lands us in a bright side‑scrolling world where two players can team up as the alien duo, hunting down stowaway Earthlings with a radar and trapping them in jars. Along the way, presents pop up offering super jars, extra scans or even teleport moves, while coins let you feed parking meters to trigger quirky events or jump into mini‑games like Jam Outs and the Fungus Olympics.
The level design is surprisingly varied for a 1993 Genesis title – 17 stages that let you bounce through bubbles, slide across arctic ice, or hop over giant fungi, and hidden underwater passages lead to secret lairs. Scattered throughout are ten Lamont the Funkapotomus artifacts; collecting them all unlocks the game’s true ending. A quick three‑to‑four‑month development sprint added indoor zones, new terrain types and a larger cartridge that crammed in richer graphics and a layered, remixed soundtrack.
Even years later the title still gets shout‑outs: GamesRadar ranked it tenth among the best Genesis games, and Mega placed it fourteenth in its all‑time Mega Drive list, cementing its funky legacy.
Storyline
Toe Jam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron picks up where the original adventure left off. After crash‑landing on Earth, the funky alien duo rebuilt their Rapmaster Rocketship and finally made it back to their home world, Funkotron. Their triumphant return is quickly derailed when a group of Earthlings, who secretly hitched a ride on the ship, begin wreaking havoc across the planet. The invaders spread panic among the citizens and even scare the legendary Lamont the Funkapotomus into another dimension. It falls to ToeJam and Earl to hunt down every stowaway, trap them in jars, and send them back to Earth, restoring peace to Funkotron.
