Summary

Time Trax (Prototype) is a hidden gem for the Sega Genesis that never saw an official launch, but its story lives on thanks to a leaked ROM in 2013. The game mirrors its SNES sibling, putting you in the shoes of Captain Lambert as he wields a Pellet Projection Tube, martial‑arts moves, and a time‑slow ability across eight gritty levels, all without a continue option. What truly sets this version apart is the soundtrack: Tim Follin’s compositions run through a custom sound driver crafted by Dean Belfield—technology that never appeared in any other Mega Drive title. Although Black Pearl Software (THQ’s Sega label) was slated to publish it, the project vanished, likely tangled up in Malibu Interactive’s sale to GameTek. The prototype’s eventual discovery gave retro fans a rare glimpse of what could have been, preserving both its visual design and its unique audio legacy.

Storyline

Time Trax (Prototype) puts you in the shoes of police Captain Lambert, a law‑enforcement officer backed by a super‑computer named S.E.L.M.A. Using the experimental Trax device, Lambert is sent back through history to hunt down the rogue commander Sepp Dietrich and the mastermind doctor Mordecai Sahmbi.
Sahmbi has been dispatching criminal fugitives into the past, hoping they will alter key events and give him control of the future. Across eight distinct levels, Lambert must track and capture each of these time‑displaced outlaws before their interference reshapes history. Only by stopping the fugitives can he thwart Sahmbi’s plan and restore the timeline.
