Summary

Time Killers finally made its way onto the Sega Genesis in July 1996, four years after the arcade debut. The port had a rocky history: announced for a spring 1994 launch, it was first cancelled by Nintendo for the SNES and then shelved by THQ for the Genesis, only to be resurrected as part of THQ’s “Arcade Classics” line. When it arrived, critics were merciless—Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a 4.2/10 and Next Generation a dismal 1/5, lambasting the choppy animation, muffled voices and graphics that looked almost 8‑bit. The gameplay itself was a curious mix of Mortal Kombat’s gore and Street Fighter‑style controls, with each button tied to a specific limb: left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg, and head. Press both limb buttons for a stronger strike, and if you manage to sever an arm, the fighter keeps battling with only legs and head, losing the ability to block. A “Death Move” (all five buttons) can decapitate an opponent, while a “Super Death Move” adds arm‑slicing when the foe is stunned. Despite the novelty, the Genesis version’s poor execution made it a footnote in fighting‑game history, remembered more for its delayed release than its combat.

Storyline

In Time Killers, eight fictional warriors drawn from a wide span of history and even the future are thrown together in a battle‑royale style showdown. Each combatant represents a distinct era, some modeled after real historical figures or legends, and brings period‑appropriate weapons to the arena.

The goal is to defeat all seven opponents and then face Death himself in a final match. Overcoming Death grants the victor true immortality, and the game ends with the newly immortal champion.
