Summary
Test Drive II – The Duel drops you behind the wheel of some of the world’s fastest machines – a Porsche 959, a Ferrari F40 and, on the console, a Lamborghini Diablo – as you tear through scorching deserts, neon‑lit cities and winding coastlines. The game rewards daring: finish a level without crashing or running out of gas and you earn a bonus life, while each crash adds a painful thirty‑second penalty to your clock.
Police are never far behind; exceed the speed limit and they’ll chase, issuing time‑costing tickets if they overtake you, but a direct collision with a cop car ends the run instantly. Difficulty settings decide whether your ride shifts automatically or manually, and every car comes equipped with a radar detector. The Genesis version struggled with critics, landing a modest 35 % score, but the high‑octane chase and the thrill of pushing 200 MPH still make it a memorable slice of late‑80s arcade racing.
Storyline
Test Drive II: The Duel drops you onto public highways that span the United States, divided into four distinct courses. "Desert Blast" (Easy) roams the Southwest desert with cacti and sand‑dune cliffs, while "City Bound" (Medium) cruises the Midwest past Mount Rushmore and winding tunnels. "East Coast" (Hard) offers a breezy New England shoreline view, and "West Coast" (Hardest) races beneath Seattle’s skyline and the iconic Space Needle, each dotted with bridges, cliffs and grassy stretches.
Police patrol every level, and any hint of speeding summons a chase that can end in a ticket—adding precious seconds to your clock. The game’s narrative hinges on these confrontations: evade the law and an animated female officer shares a friendly smile with your driver, but get caught and the same officer places you under arrest. Those two outcomes wrap up the high‑speed duel.
