Summary
Taz‑Mania on the Sega Genesis lets you tumble through a bright, cartoon‑styled Taz‑Mania as the wild Tasmanian Devil himself. I love how the spin attack feels like a true whirlwind: it clears enemies, boosts jumps and lets you roll past hazardous bits unscathed. The game spices things up with a handful of collectible foods—most restore health, while fiery chili peppers unlock a temporary flame‑breath, and glowing stars grant brief invincibility. Throw‑away items such as bombs become weapons when tossed, but eat the wrong one and you’re punished.
Behind the scenes, developers Burt Sloane and Jonathan Miller at Recreational Brainware crafted a clever “compositor” tool that stitched animation frames from tiny pixel pieces, giving Taz a surprisingly expressive face for a 16‑bit platformer. Critics in the UK praised the eye‑catching graphics and smooth animation, though some noted the difficulty leaned toward the easy side. Still, the game’s solid controls and quirky power‑ups earned it a spot among the most memorable Genesis titles for fans of zany, fast‑paced platform action.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis platformer Taz‑Mania, the ever‑hungry Tasmanian Devil roams a treacherous island filled with classic Taz‑stopping obstacles. Players help Taz whomp enemies, spin through hazards, and, when a foe can’t be beaten, simply gobble them up. The game flips the usual “save the world” premise: one night Hugh Tazmanian Devil tells his three children – Taz, sister Molly and brother Jake – a legend about giant seabirds whose massive eggs could sustain a devil family for a year. Intrigued by the idea of a colossal omelet, Taz sets off to locate the Lost Valley where these birds still nest. Across varied stages, the player guides Taz toward the hidden valley, hunting for the legendary giant egg while dodging traps and devouring anything that stands in his way.
