Summary
I always get a rush when I grab the Genesis cartridge of Super Smash TV. The game sticks to its twin‑joystick roots, forcing you to swivel the D‑pad and fire button independently while you clear wave after wave in a single‑screen arena. Money bursts everywhere, and each credit not only pads your high score but can be swapped for random power‑ups or prizes at the end of the round. Two players can team up or try to out‑earn each other, since the game tallies cash separately and announces a winner after every level. The hidden “Pleasure Dome” appears when enough keys are collected, offering a break‑neck bonus stage that rewards even more cash. All this frantic action fits neatly onto a 16‑bit cart, making it a standout shoot‑'em‑up on the Genesis.
Storyline
Super Smash TV drops players into a dystopian television game show set in the imagined year 1999. Contestants must blast through endless waves of attackers while grabbing cash, VCRs, toasters and other prizes, plus occasional power‑ups that last only a few seconds. A sadistic host narrates the carnage, shouting lines like “Total carnage! I love it!” and ultimately appears as the final boss. After each arena is cleared, the player chooses an exit; one door leads to a tougher end‑of‑level boss, the other opens the bonus Pleasure Dome. The whole premise riffs on the bleak futures of movies such as RoboCop and The Running Man, turning the TV screen into a lethal arena of loot and survival.
