Summary

The Super Shinobi II, known outside Japan as Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, lands as the direct sequel to The Revenge of Shinabi and pushes the series into a darker, faster‑paced arena. It arrived on the Sega Genesis after a careful postponement from an intended 1992 launch, giving Sega the breathing room to polish both the combat feel and the visual flair.

Development was handled by Megasoft, with Sega publishing the title in Japan on July 23, 1993. Early builds leaked later reveal a version that diverged sharply in level design and story beats, hinting at a more experimental direction that never made it to the final cartridge.

Critics praised the game’s tight controls and striking graphics, cementing its reputation as one of the Genesis’s standout entries. Even years later, it still shows up on lists of the console’s greatest titles, a testament to the extra effort spent perfecting the experience.

Storyline

In Super Shinobi II the nefarious Neo Zeed resurfaces, once again threatening the world. The evil crime syndicate, believed to have been destroyed two years earlier, has returned under the command of a mysterious figure known only as the Shadow Master. Sensing the renewed danger, ninja hero Joe Musashi leaves the lonely mountaintops of Japan. He descends to confront his old nemesis and put an end to the syndicate’s plans.
