Summary
Super Fantasy Zone lets you pilot Opa‑Opa, a quirky, winged spaceship that can both fly and walk, across vibrant, scrolling landscapes reminiscent of Defender. As you blaze through each zone, enemy generators drop gold coins you can spend on temporary power‑ups—wider spread shots, rear fire, or a laser—and on speed boosts, letting you constantly tweak Opa‑Opa’s feel mid‑run. The game keeps the series’ signature pastel palette and upbeat tracks, courtesy of Naoki Kodaka, while a hidden code even swaps the music for Space Harrier’s theme. Though it never saw a U.S. cartridge release and appeared only on Sega Channel or later Virtual Console, the challenge level and striking visuals made it a standout in the Mega Drive’s shooter lineup.
Storyline
Super Fantasy Zone follows the heroic pilot Opa‑Opa on a personal quest for vengeance. After his father, O‑papa, is slain defending the Fantasy Zone from the invading Dark Menon, Opa‑Opa takes up the fight. He battles through waves of Dark Menon’s minions, clearing each sector of the zone. The ultimate goal is to eradicate the dark forces and restore peace to the once‑tranquil Fantasy Zone.
