Summary

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf drops you into the cockpit of an M1 Abrams and splits the screen between a detailed instrument panel and a sweeping desert view. The split‑screen design lets you track everything from ammo levels to the horizon, while you hunt down helicopter gunships, Soviet‑style T‑72s and the dreaded Scud launchers. The game stayed single‑player only, so every victory feels earned, even if the missions can start to feel repetitive after a while.

When it first hit the market, reviewers were split: Mean Machines gave it a modest 52%, Nintendo Power was a bit kinder at 67%, while Super Play and Super Gamer hovered around the low‑50s, praising the graphics but noting the gameplay loop could wear thin. A 2001 re‑release by Majesco brought the title back to the Genesis, Game Gear and SNES, and the Game Gear version simply went by Super Battletank. The legacy even stretched to a 2003 GBA remake titled Operation: Armored Liberty, keeping the Gulf‑war tank experience alive for a new generation of retro fans.

Storyline

Super Battletank – War in the Gulf drops you into the heat of Operation Desert Storm. You take the helm of a United Nations‑marked M1 Abrams main battle tank, tasked with carving a path to victory across the desert.

The mission pits you against a mix of hostile units: fast‑moving helicopter gunships, heavily armored T‑72 tanks, and mobile Scud launchers. Each encounter forces you to balance firepower and maneuverability as you hunt down enemy positions.

Your ultimate goal is a clear military victory, achieved by surviving the onslaught and destroying the opposing forces that threaten the coalition’s advance.
