Summary
Sub‑Terrania feels like a physics‑driven playground hidden beneath the Earth’s crust. You pilot a rotatable craft that constantly fights gravity and its own inertia, using the D‑pad to spin and the B button to thrust in the direction you’re facing, while back‑thrusters let you reverse course on a dime.
Each of the nine enclosed levels is a sandbox of underground caverns where you can roam freely, but the game nudges you toward clever routing. Objectives range from rescuing trapped miners and gathering sub‑modules that turn your ship into a submarine, to hunting down alien bosses. The freedom to choose your path is balanced by the need to manage fuel, which you replenish by snatching strategically placed canisters.
Fuel isn’t the only resource; mining rails let you slide along without consuming fuel or feeling gravity, perfect for lining up shots on tough enemies. Along the way you’ll collect missile canisters, shield upgrades, extra lives, and charge the “Mega” bar for a devastating multi‑directional laser blast.
Weapons come in three colors—red, green, and blue—each with distinct range, power, and fuel‑cost traits. Power‑ups let you upgrade a color up to level 4 or switch to a different hue, though losing a life drops your weapon one tier (except on Easy mode, where upgrades stick).
Three difficulty settings tweak gravity, inertia, fuel drain, enemy resilience, and point rewards. You earn points for every enemy destroyed and receive bonuses for lives left, POWs rescued, and how efficiently you complete a mission, with Easy halving and Hard doubling the score multiplier.
Storyline
In SubTerrania, the opening scene shows a red line slicing across the sky of an off‑world asteroid as the headquarters erupts in flames. Hostile alien forces have breached the vital subterranean mining colony deep beneath the surface. Trapped workers cling to crevices and chasms while clouds of radioactive dust swirl around them. An experimental attack fighter is the sole weapon capable of turning the tide. A lone pilot is charged with destroying the invaders and rescuing the stranded miners.
