Summary

Strider on the Genesis packs the arcade’s kinetic ninja action into a cartridge that still feels fresh after all these years. The game lets you swing a plasma‑sword‑like tonfa while a grappling hook lets you cling to bulkheads, swing across gaps and even hang‑glide into the next citadel, turning every level into a vertical playground. I love how the controls reward momentum: a regular jump, a cartwheel leap when you run, a slide under spikes, and wall‑climbing with the hook all flow together, making the Amazonian jungle and the Siberian wilderness feel like living, breathing obstacle courses.

Power‑ups are quirky and useful – from attack‑range extensions and health boosts marked by the kanji 飛, to mushroom‑shaped droid companions that fire alongside you. The eight stages each end with a timer‑driven checkpoint, and the final moon‑base ending swaps the arcade’s cut‑scene for Hiryu’s glider soaring through space, set to a remix of the first‑level theme. Critics at the time praised the faithful graphics and nonstop action, earning it Best Game of the Year and Best Graphics from Electronic Gaming Monthly, and it still ranks among the top Genesis titles today.

Storyline

In the year 2048 Earth is a dystopia ruled by a mysterious dictator called the Grandmaster, also known as Meio. The player assumes the role of Hiryu, the youngest ever Super A‑ranked member of the elite ninja‑like organization called the Striders. His sole mission is to infiltrate the Grandmaster’s imperial capital—once the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, now the Eastern European Federation’s capital of the Russian Empire—and assassinate the tyrant.

The game’s setting is described as a “future land of backward time,” where the evil Master constantly taunts Hiryu. Throughout the adventure the Strider battles through futuristic environments, culminating in a final showdown with the Master, who awaits at the end as the primary antagonist.
