Summary

Strider II, known in North America as Strider Returns: Journey from Darkness, feels like a love‑letter to the original arcade hit while carving out its own quirks on the Sega Genesis. I’m instantly drawn to Hinjo’s wall‑climbing and rope‑swinging moves, plus the ability to slide under low ceilings – a nod to the classic mechanics that still works great on a 16‑bit screen. Unlike the computer versions, shurikens only appear after you collect them, and the usual robot transformation is swapped for energy orbs that orbit Hinjo, acting as a shield during boss fights. You can even pick between the original cypher and a newer “sweeping” one, giving a subtle but satisfying sense of choice across the five stages.
The graphics stand out with large, detailed sprites and richly layered backgrounds, and the digitized voice samples add a nostalgic punch. However, the animation can feel a bit choppy, the pacing slower than its predecessor, and the soundtrack drones on, which earned it mixed reviews – a 6.75/10 from Electronic Gaming Monthly and a lukewarm take from GamePro.

Storyline

Strider II on the Sega Genesis puts the ninja Hinjo on a desperate rescue mission. The Princess of Planet Magenta has been seized by a terrorist organization, and Hinjo must storm through five distinct stages to save her. The game's manual names the villain the Grandmaster (Meio), also referred to as the “Evil Master”. Along the way he battles a variety of enemies and confronts several bosses before reaching the final showdown. In the climax Hinjo faces the Grandmaster himself, defeats him, and frees the captured princess.
