Summary
Strider Hiryuu stands out on the Mega Drive as one of the system’s first 8‑Megabit cartridges, a technical brag that helped it become a bestseller in its era. The game’s home version diverges from the arcade by delivering a distinct ending, where the closing theme stitches together two pieces originally planned for the arcade but ends up looping the first level’s music instead. Years later the title resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console, first in Japan (Nov 15 2011) and then in North America (Feb 16 2012), giving a new generation a chance to experience that quirky finale. Even back then, ACE magazine praised the conversion, saying it was "as good as" the earlier Amiga version, a rare nod that still feels satisfying for retro fans.
Storyline
Set in a futuristic world, Strider Hiryuu follows the secret ninja‑like organization known as the Striders, specialists in smuggling, kidnapping, demolitions and other wetworks. You play as the youngest elite Strider, Hiryu, who is summoned by Vice Director Matic to assassinate his captured friend Kain. Instead of killing Kain, Hiryu rescues him and, with fellow Strider Sheena, uncovers a conspiracy involving a faction of the Striders led by Matic himself and an outside group called the Enterprise, headed by Faceas Clay. The plot centers on a mind‑control weapon codenamed Zain; Hiryu tracks down and destroys its units, eventually confronting Matic on an orbiting space station and killing him. In the epilogue Hiryu declines to rejoin the organization, retires, and walks away, sheathing his weapon for good.
